It's taken a bit of encouragement, but my upcycled vintage necktie accessories- Greeley, Dewitt, Mini Dewitt, Prudence, Constance, Clemence, Clancy and the Vagabond- are starting to catch on. Some have gone coast to coast, even!

I just sold the Version #3 Vagabond to a female attorney from California (SQUEEE) and last week a Constance went to New Orleans.

Now that the wedding season is coming to a close once again, WHEW- I was soooo busy this year, I've had some time to come up with a few new things for summer and fall.

Along with several new little fascinator hats featuring a variety of flora and fauna- I've been engulfed by a sea of neckties. Seriously. I got a 40lb bag of them in the mail just this morning and promptly ripped the bag open and poured them on the floor. Knee- deep!!!

There are always a few throw-aways--- ones that I can't save due to stains, being worn out or tied in knots so tight I can't get them out and the tie is ruined-- but there are also hundreds of beauties. And I've been putting them to good use in a couple of new designs.

Vagabond is a style I first made this past winter. It's a mixture of ties stitched into pleasing patterns in a fun hat. There are three in the shop currently. Here's my favorite.

Clancy debuted this past weekend to several rave reviews. Clancy is a glasses/sunglasses case utilizing strictly polyester ties from the 60s and 70s. Fun stuff! Lots more of those coming soon.

Prudence came into being late last night/early this morning and is now available in the shop. Pru features two neckties handstitched into a necklace/collar designs and decorated with vintage buttons. Lots more designs colors and patterns are coming soon.

June 1st means applications open for one of the most popular festivals around.... STRANGE FOLK in O'Fallon Illinois.

This year's fest is September 25th and 26th from 10-6.

I just applied and I think you should apply too, you crafty two shoes, you! SO GET TO IT!

FYI: According to the website:

This year, 150 vendors and 10 alternates will be hand-picked to peddle their wares at the festival! It is FREE to apply. The deadline to submit your application is July 1st, 2010 (opens June 1st). All entrants will be juried thusly, and notified with our decision on or before July 15th. The individual vendor fee will be $75; discounts are given for shared tent spaces.

I got a message about a week ago from a lovely girl I met at the Indie Craft Revolution in March. She wanted to commission a headpiece for her vintage inspired wedding later in mid-June.

That's right, a LOCAL WEDDING! Wooohoo!

She promptly sent me a pic of her newly purchased vintage dress- a lovely dusty lilac color.

Immediately I got visions of 40s glamour mixed with modern sensibility and a touch of fun! She told me she liked the Sybil Hat from my shop-- Sybil features vintage white velvet millinery leaves, goose feather biots tied in knots and an attached hand trimmed Russian veil. A white straw millinery fascinator/hat base anchors the piece and features a clear comb sewn securely into place for ease of placement on the bride's head. Perfect!

*The bride chose to not have feathers due to ethical issues. So I chose to use organza and velvet hydrangea millinery flowers instead.

With basically free-reign given, I started in today. I am kind of in love with how it turned out. Hope you will be too!

I was contacted a couple of weeks ago by a Mom looking for a custom "steampunk" boutonniere and corsage set for her son and his date for Prom. We settled all the details and I got to work- the colors were black, gold and brown with steampunk elements. *

*You may be asking yourself, "What the heck is STEAMPUNK?" Well, straight out of Wikipedia, Steampunk is: a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction, frequently featuring elements of fantasy, that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used — usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England — but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality. Well, Mom sent me a picture of son and girlfriend headed to prom. So cute! I love the goggles on top of his top hat and the zippers on her shoes. My pieces add just the right amount to an already stellar costume.

Hi Friends and Fans!

I just wanted to drop a quick note and update you as to what's happening with Buffalo Blue Designs this spring...

First, we now have select styles available at Paste Crafts (1009 Russell Blvd, St. Louis)- right now Katie is carrying my Dewitt and Mini Dewitt Vintage Necktie Headbands and we hope to increase the offerings in time. If you haven't been by Paste since they opened last summer, it's definitely worth the time. There are pieces from more than 60 artists available in the store as well as a wide variety of craft and arts supplies and classes. Each year on Easter Sunday, Marjie Kennedy peers over the church balcony of the choir loft, spotting the women who proudly display their Easter bonnets.

While marveling at them, she counts how many women choose to dress up their Easter outfits with a spring hat just like she does. Twenty years ago, she estimates she would count as many as 30.

These days, she can count the bonnets on one hand.

"Every single year when I was a kid, for Easter, we'd get a brand-new dress and a brand-new hat," said Kennedy, 57, of South St. Louis. "I have a sister that's just two years younger, and a lot of times we'd get similar-looking hats and dresses. Sometimes my mother would sew and make the Easter dress, but we would always buy a hat."

Although it's a tradition that isn't as popular as it used to be, Kennedy doesn't mind. She has continued to wear a bonnet each year.

"I guess everybody's unique, but I'm willing to wear things that not everyone would wear," she said.

Sure, Kennedy has her fair share of classic spring bonnets, adorned with pastel-colored ribbons and flowers. But her favorites are the ones that stand out — her bold black and gold hat she purchased at Ann's Hat Boutique on Euclid and her bonnet with a large peacock feather that gets a lot of admiration.

St. Louis hat and jewelry designer Allyson Bailey Wilmowski has her own unconventional style of Easter bonnets she sells on her Web site,www.buffalobluedesigns.com, and in Paste Crafts in Soulard. She chooses to make bonnets that attach to headbands.

"I use a lot of feathers and straw bases," Bailey Wilmowski said. "The Easter bonnets I've made are little tiny straw hats, and then I attach flowers and butterflies and lace. Then I attach the whole thing and sew it to a headband. It's good for kids and adults." Bailey Wilmowski's four types of Easter bonnets are hot sellers. She also creates custom designs.

She made the decision to add the Easter bonnets to her collection as something new and fun for the spring. Selecting a hat to match her dress is a big part of her Easter memories as a child.

"My family was always really into dressing up and having the egg hunt," she said. "I always got dressed up and wore the little hats and lacy dresses. We always got a new one every year and got to pick it out. It's a fun thing for kids as well as adults."

While Bailey Wilmowski has noticed a decline through the years in the number of women wearing the accessory on Easter, she is beginning to see them emerge again.

"In my business, I'm starting to see a turn in hats becoming more popular again for adults as well as children," Bailey Wilmowski said. "I sell a lot of headbands and hats now. It's also becoming more popular with the younger generation as something different."

Indie Craft Revolution- RECAP

Well, another craft show has come and gone- THIS ONE ROCKED!

Indie Craft Revolution kicked off on Saturday 3/13 at 10am and ended Sunday 3/14 at 4pm.

I shared a beautiful sunlight corner room with Hot Wire Designs by Cat, Stick to Your Knittin' Kitten and TurnUp Green - we had a great time laughing, chatting and learning.

I also met tons of my twitter fans (HI GUYS!) and some other fun new people, with the help of my husband Tom running my credit card app sold lots of fun stuff, made a few trades for other goodies from vendors I love and in general had a blast. Will definitely be doing this show again next time.

Special thanks to the wonderful Kate Valleroy of Red Anvil Art for a wonderful show!

Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show 3- The Holiday Edition- is just around the corner.

I'm gearing up BIG TIME with lots of new items (not ever seen in my shop) as well as old favorites and some best sellers.

If you need gifts and are looking for local and handmade- THIS IS THE PLACE, PEOPLE!

It's sure to be a lot of fun and a great way to both support local artisans in the St. Louis area as well as get some holiday shopping done.

Urban Nomad Redux- Feather City

There are few more pieces I added to my Etsy Urban Nomad Fall/Winter Collection yesterday and today. Let me know what you think...

It may be a bit overly dramatic, but I couldn't resist. Maybe there's a hot fashionista out there looking for just such a piece (or maybe a drag queen- ladies, email me!). The Urban Nomad Natural Charms-Peacock Spiral Necklace Scarf ($50) is pretty awesome in construction if I do say so my self. Lots more pictures on Etsy.

Urban Nomad Natural Charms-Pheasant and Brass Studs Mega Brooch ($60) took a lot of hours to make but I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. I hand trimmed each feather and then added a sprinkle of brass studs for accents.

This one I'm still mulling over. Again it may be just the thing for someone out there, and I hope it is, cause the Urban Nomad Natural Charms Turquoise Feather Mega Brooch ($50) is really beautiful in pictures and ESPECIALLY in person. The feathers really shine and catch the light. It would be awesome on a black coat or jacket for a special night out.

I can also customize these by adding (or subtracting) things like jewels, studs, buttons etc.

Decided to spice up the Urban Nomad line in my Etsy shop with a few new things. So here's what's happening...

The Tiny Nomad $20- smaller than even the Mini but still with all the style and statement!

The Two-Tone Nomad $25 (this one is a Mini). Same style punch packed into a smaller package, now with two or three colors in one!

The Urban Nomad Natural Charms Mega Brooch in Guinea $50. What to say... it's just so rockin'! I plan on making some with button instead of jewels, some with nothing but feathers and lots of other feather choices including Pheasant, Chicken, Duck, and Rooster (coque). Check back soon for those.

I may still come up with a few other things to add, but you know I'll keep you posted.

Well THE BIRDS headpieces just keep getting more popular! Now it's been featured in the Etsy Halloween Costumes Gift Guide (OMG!) which quickly sold another and suddenly it was out of the guide... Apparently selling the item cycles it out of the guide. Darn it.

Well they say you get 15 minutes of fame. Mine was more like 15 seconds... I just can't keep these listed!

One of my favorite movies of all time is Hitchcock's The Birds.

It's timeless, interesting and kitchy- three of my favorite characteristics in a movie...

Last week, an Etsy customer of mine, Leisha, requested a Birds headband to wear for her brother's upcoming Halloween wedding. I promptly agreed, thinking I'd make an extra for myself. I ordered the crows, made Leisha's band and sent it off to her.

With the extra few crows I made a couple of different styles and decided that instead of keeping them- I have a bad tendency to want to keep all my creations- I'd list them on Etsy.

Little did I know that I'd soon have a full-on RUN on these things.

I literally have answered questions and edited listings for these things (which are in 3 sizes in the shop by the way if you feel the need to get in on the run) every 5 minutes since Friday!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining at all. It's just a little surprising. Who knew people- all over the world people- are so in to crows. And not just for Halloween!

The whole idea is a little for the birds if you ask me... but people seem to like it.

Well, Tom and I close on our new house in the Shaw neighborhood tomorrow morning at 9am. I really have to give it to our wonderful realtor, Leigh Maibes of Circa Properties. She is the best and made our first time home buying experience a breeze. Highly recommend you work with her if you're looking for a home in STL city.

The past couple weeks have been a whirl wind of activity preparing to move and packing things up. We're almost completely packed now..just a few bare necessities left out and whatever is in the fridge and freezer.

Tomorrow after closing we're headed right to Home Depot to pick up our paint and some other supplies we need to ready the new domicile. We're gonna be ripping up carpet and painting all afternoon tomorrow and then Friday we'll be putting in some new lighting and generally getting ready to move our stuff in. Saturday at 8am the movers come to Waterman to move us over to Flad and hopefully by the end of the weekend we should have everything over at the new house.

Next week we have to finish cleaning the apt. so we can check outta this dump and get on with our lives.

So while we're in the process, my Etsy shop will be closed. Well, it will still be open, but I won't ship until early next week when I get my studio re-set-up.

Wish us luck on our weekend venture- and feel free to stop by and see us as we work to make our new house a home. We'll be having an open house later in the fall, but if you want to see the work in progress come on by- call me if you need directions or the address...

1930s Glam Wedding in Door County Wisconsin etc.

This wedding should be just gorgeous and I'm so very proud of how things are turning out. The bride has been an absolute dream to work with and allowed me a lot of freedom which I think always makes for a better finished product.

The wedding will take place in mid-October in Door County, Wisconsin. I've never been, but I've heard it's lovely and will be a picturesque place for a fall wedding.

The pieces follow the theme of 1930s vintage glamour with a main color of truffle brown and accents in golds and pinks. All of the maids (6 of them) are fair complected and several have red hair, so to play off of that I used lots of shades of brown and gold feathers and velvet leaves in chocolate, a sunset-y pink, and a varigated gold. The bride's dress is ivory with light beading and her headpiece features an attached ivory birdcage veil (most proud of this). The maids' pieces will also have veils in a shiny gold lightweight knit. I've yet to attach those veils as the idea makes me a little nervous, but I am hoping for courage when the time comes. That's tomorrow...

And as a post script- after having surgery again last week I'll be glad to finally finish this set after procrastinating on it waiting for inspiration to strike.

(For another wedding I have scheduled- I'll have plenty of time again. The vintage rocker chic wedding for Taylor isn't until Nov. of 2010! Lucky me!!!)

A few weeks ago a customer we'll call Ashley asked me to create a 15 piece bridal suite of boutonnieres and wrist corsages for her October wedding.

Her theme, she told me, was natural with a hint of vintage; pheasant and guinea feathers, scraps of book pages, twigs and vines and fall leaves.

The results are below- she loves them (or so she has said) hehe. I think they're pretty cute too.

Big A$$ Recap and THE RESULTS

As you readers know, I was less than enthusiastic about my experience with the Big A$$ Indie Art and Craft Show.

Well, I can now report that despite being slightly unhappy with how things were displayed, supervised, etc., I did make a decent amount of money from the weekend.

All in all my outlays for just the show were around $150 ($15 app fee, $35 entrance fee/booth fee, 12% admin fee taken from profits). I ended up clearing $560+. For my first real show, I'm happy with that.

Happy enough to give it another go in December. Big A$$ 3, here I come!

Big A$$ Indie Art and Craft Show Recap

Wow! What a wild weekend...

So all in all I think I sold quite a bit - I'm not positive since I haven't seen the receipts yet or received a check (Aug 14th- I'll let you all know the real numbers)- but the times I was there, I couldn't help feeling kinda felt bummed seeing my stuff so man/woman-handled. Broken=not sellable. Didn't seem to be much supervision sometimes. Especially the first night when headliners Leslie Hall and the Lys drew in quite a crowd on top of the normal craft seekers.

It was a cool idea, but I think there was a lot of stuff/ too much stuff/ out on the floor at one time leading to piling, pulling, and breakage. No one got the exposure they should have because people were having to dig to look at things.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have done it, but I'm still debating whether to do it again in December. I guess the end numbers will help me decide that...

On the positive side, I heard a lot of great comments about my things and I got some insight into price points and what people generally think of the designs. Eavesdropping is so good at craftshows ---AND THE PEOPLEWATCHING!! Top notch!

Rant/Vent/Gripe Session

Okay, I don't know about anyone else, but lately I've been getting lots of what I'd call "mass emails" via Etsy convo from craft guilds, shows, people in general, past customers, past sellers etc. and it's getting a little old.

Don't get me wrong, I like people liking my stuff and when I see a new convo in my mailbox I still get kind of excited. But, when people start sending me these huge convos about being interested in my things because I "bring personality to St. Louis" I get a little suspicious. Especially when they don't address me or my business specifically or mention any of my items... MASS EMAILS sent out to who knows how many people in hopes of getting a bite from one or two or 50 unsuspecting Etsy'ers.

Grrrrrr...

Okay, rant over. I just get a little frustrated at all the fakery.

Christmas in July went off without a hitch on Saturday at ModCreations' home. I made some great new friends- thanks Sydney, Lulu, Mary, Maggie, and Shannon- and we had a great time meeting customers as well as talking, drinking Mojitos and selling fun crafts.

So for those of you wondering why I've been a bit absent lately, I wanted to let you know that I haven't been slacking. Well, not all the time at least... hehe.

I've been creating and getting ready for two craft shows that are coming up.

First, on July 11th, tomorrow, I have Christmas in July at the lovely Sydney of ModCreations home from 1-3pm. It's at 4205 Utah St. in St. Louis. There's a facebook invite for anyone who hasn't gotten it by email or seen it elsewhere here.

Then, at the end of the month (July 31-Aug 2) I have the Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show at Mad Art Gallery. It will be a department store style sale featuring more than 90 artists in one of the coolest modern art and display spaces around. Tons more info here.
